The Nether is a dangerous dimension in Minecraft that allows for fast travel between distant points in the Overworld. Every block travelled in the Nether equals 8 blocks in the Overworld, making it useful for long-distance transportation.

Portal Mechanics

When entering the Nether through a portal, the game attempts to place you at coordinates that are 1/8th of your Overworld coordinates (or 8 times when going from Nether to Overworld). If it can't place a portal at the exact calculated location, it will search for a valid location nearby.

The Y coordinate generally remains unchanged unless there's no valid position at that height.

Portal Linking Behaviour

When a new portal is created, the game follows these steps:

  1. First, it checks for existing portals within a certain range of the calculated position
  2. If one exists, it links to that portal
  3. If none exists, it tries to create a new portal at the exact calculated position
  4. If that position isn't valid, it searches for a valid position nearby
